Ahmed H is the name given to a man currently held in court under Hungarian custody for his alleged ‘terrorist’ activities. The Hungarian media, under strict rule of president Viktor Orbán, have claimed him to be the leader of a radical Islamic Group. He has been jailed for 10 years with charges of causing disruption and orchestrating clashes between police and refugees on the Hungarian-Serbian border in 2015. During the clashes at the border, Ahmed H admitted to throwing a rock across the border, and calling for peace on both sides through a loudspeaker.

Gauri van Gulik, Amnesty’s deputy Europe director spoke in court: “To sentence Ahmed to 10 years in prison for a terrorist act is absurd. Illegally crossing a border and even throwing rocks would not justify this ruling. This is a man who tried to get his elderly parents and other family members to safety, and we know he tried to negotiate between the crowd and police. On the basis of what we know, this ruling is an affront to justice.”
